God Bless the USA....I know I wouldn't
These days I find myself feeling very un-American. It seems that American's are lazy, selfish, superficial, violence-loving people. Is there any good left in this country? I am almost positive that if I lived in another country, I would hate Americans too. This massacre in New York this morning just pushes me over the edge. What the hell is wrong with the people in this country? Yes, I am not so naive to believe that it only happens here, but it happens here a lot more often than it happens in a lot of other places. And yes I realize there are much worse places to live so I shouldn't complain, but I can also think of better places to live that are much more peaceful and have significantly lower crime rates, especially for violent crimes. Last sunday a guy came into Hollywood video and he went over into GameCrazy. He asked if they had guitar hero Metallica. Austin told him he did and proceeded to sell him one. As he was doing this the guy said that he was just at wal-mart and asked them if they had it and the electronics guy was saying that it didn't come out until April 15th. So this guy said he had to walk away because he was about to punch him in the face. How freaking ridiculous is that?! That story perfectly sums up the average American to me. Really?! You are going to punch a guy in the face because of a video game?! And it's just because he was misinformed! Give me a freaking break! This seems to be what this country has come to. We value human life so minimally that we are willing to just go and punch somebody for absolutely nothing, or walk into an old folks home and kill completely random strangers because we don't want to live anymore. Well, to that guy and to the guy this morning, who the hell do you think you are? Who are you to decide if people get to live or die? What have any of these people ever done to you? Absolutely nothing. But you are such a coward and piece of trash that you have to go gunning down strangers and then kill yourself. Thankfully the guy at the old folks home last week was taken down by the on duty police officer and will be serving his time in prison. I am so tired of people who think they can just do whatever they want. Also last sunday we had a boy get arrested in GameCrazy because he was just at Game Stop and he stole a 5 year old's nintendo ds. This piece of garbage was 18 and he stole from a freaking five year old! And then he came to game crazy and tried to trade it in. My opinion of this country has become pretty low, and even lower for the citizens of this country. I feel almost ashamed to be an american and be on any sort of similar ground with these people. True I make mistakes, but I don't go around playing God either.

I hear ya, man. However, I don't see what it has to do with America at all. I think you've got that "cum hoc ergo propter hoc" logical fallacy going on. If you follow world news, you'll see that exact same crap going on everywhere, if not worse. And if you follow history, you'll find that this crap has been going on since, like, forever. There has been and always will be that percentage of any population that is depraved and selfish and will act accordingly.
My response to your post can be summed up in a post a wrote a year ago on my blog. Check it out when you get a chance (http://www.nichooton.com/opinion/proud-to-be-an-american/).
I think its helpful to remind myself that on the days when the crazies are being highlighted in the news for their insane choices that I can't even begin to understand, millions of people all over the world had a regular day of going about their business without killing anyone. Millions of people got up, had breakfast, went to work, and did their thing without even thinking about killing or hurting someone else.
The problem is the news makes it seem commonplace, and yes, crime does happen everywhere, but the good people, the ones rarely in the news, far outnumber the ones in the news.
Google "good news" and you'll find all sorts of news sites and organizations that highlight the good things going on in the world.
@Kelsey - one of my faves is HappyNews.com. Did you know that teen pregnancy and drug use is actually down significantly over the past decade? You won't hear about that in the mainstream media.
Having lived in a more disadvantaged country than this one, I can assure you even with stupid stuff like this, we still have it better. I wouldn't trade living in this country for anything.
